The Changes, They Are Comin'

On the day of what is arguably one of the nation’s most historic events, I thought it appropriate to write a blog about change, which is also apropos for career planning and management. As we look to the future and examine our economic condition, I am excited (like most people), but also nervous (also like most people) about what our new president will do to facilitate positive change and improve the condition of the country.

Hopefully President Obama will get us out of Iraq and lead us to the path of economic wellness and prosperity. No doubt this will take some time.

And now the segue ...

As you consider the next steps you will take in your current position or in your career overall, change is something that must be embraced. While change can be (and often is) a scary thing – it is often necessary to realize increased opportunities and achieve success.

Take for example a client that I worked with recently who was about to assume a new position within the company where she was working. The new opportunity offered more money and more responsibility. She was chosen because she did a great job, displayed leadership qualities, and consistently delivered. Why then was she somewhat downtrodden? Well, it was directly related to her nervousness and trepidation regarding the upcoming change. Despite being completely qualified for the role, her self-perception needed an adrenaline shot to prepare her for the new position. After spending some time together reviewing her present role, the new position, and developing a strategy to tackle her new responsibilities, she was prepared and very much looking forward to the position that put her on an executive leadership track.

I think her perception of change was scarier for her than the actual new role that she was assuming. Well, now it’s a few months later; and I am happy to report that she is doing great (not that I had any doubt) and the fear of change well behind her.

I am looking forward to the positive change for the future for all of us.
