AN ASIDE - Show me the stuff

I just stumbled upon this blog called We Covet. The bloggers review, well, stuff. It could be anything from handbags to furniture, and cleaning products. They review all sorts of things. The interesting thing (at least for me) is that, like me, they like stuff!

Having recently been invited to join the evil Rue La La (and worse) Gilt Groupe (Do you think that name is on purpose?) consumerism has gone to a new level. I log on exactly at 11:00am to quickly source the pages for things I simply don’t need, but cannot afford not to have! How can I resist? They are bargains – veritable steals! Where can you get a Kate Spade bag that retails for nearly $500 for just $128? How could I not buy it? And, it doesn’t stop there. The Yurman sale?! OMG! I was saved though. I was working out with my personal trainer when the sale started; this was much to my chagrin, but my husband was totally relieved.

Moving on, I was invited (you need to be invited to spend money on these sites!) Can you imagine? Someone needs to invite you (if you want an invite - drop me a note) or else you have no way of accessing the site. So, there’s a cache to spending your hard earned cashola. I digress – Gilt Group is even more upscale than Rue La La with some of their sales for very high-end jewelry for $15,000. I don’t know about you, but if I were going to spend $15,000 on a piece of jewelry, I am not sure an online forum is where I would do that. You know, I would need to try it on, get the opinion of every person within a 700-mile radius, and have a written pact that the piece would appreciate over time. There’s nothing worse than buyer’s remorse. All of this has nothing to do with the guilt (properly spelled) I would feel regarding the missing money for my children’s college funds!

At the end of the day – I like stuff, the name brand stuff. Even when told the copies look the same and nobody knows – I know! I am now on the austerity plan. I look at Rue La La and immediately hit DELETE.

Yea, I know this is a departure – a big departure from careers; but I figured why not? We all need a diversion. Mine is shopping.
