Techies Still Rule The Heap
So we all know how important technology has become to our daily existence. Some of us are complete Luddites and others of us, well, are so savvy that we can build a computer from scratch, create the software and hook everything up to collect data from every world power. Sadly, I am not among that group, but happily, my husband is. This works out especially well for me considering I spend my life online, and oftentimes need help.
I came across this article that reveals that while companies are reducing the number of workers (even in the technical field), those people employed saw an increase in compensation in 2008. Given the state of the economy right now, I would say that is pretty good! See the full article here.
It should come as no surprise that people working in the security space saw the biggest increases in 2008. After all, with security breaches on the rise – see recent news on Heartland Payment Systems, the credit card processor that recently was victimized by what is likely the largest security breach ever – maybe as many as several hundreds of million credit card transaction records lost - a veritable cornucopia for identity thieves and other criminals looking to swindle the unsuspecting public.
While the economy is affecting everyone, one thing is certain; technology will continue to grow and become a pervasive part of all of our lives. What does this mean? Although every sector is being affected, technology professionals have the capacity to protect corporate and individual data, and their value will no doubt continue to increase making technical positions a critical component of companies’ business strategies.
