Learn Me Right

I love Stumble Upon. It’s simply amazing the things that are available at the tip of one’s fingers! Of course, I am always looking for something interesting and informative to blog about. Well today, it did not take any hair pulling or deep introspection to come up with something that I think could be truly useful – for everyone. Check out this link. It is a plethora of resources targeted at teachers, but I think very relevant for just about anyone.

I don’t know about you, but admittedly I oftentimes look at my son’s 5th grade homework (Think: Are you Smarter than a 5th Grader?) and realize, uh, no, I don’t think I am smarter than a 5th grader. New Math? What’s that? What happened to just doing long division the normal way? What’s new about math anyway? From what I can tell, it’s been around a long, long, long, long time.

Interestingly, my husband is really good at math; and I don’t just mean has an affinity for it. I mean that he can solve almost any mathematical equation. Physics? Pshah! Algorithms? No problem. Differential Equations? Bring it on! Me? I can barely figure out a word problem involving a train, two people named Betsy and Chip to calculate the distance to a far reaching location. And don’t forget the red herring on the train, Tom. So, it was kind of funny (but not really) when Jeffrey (husband) made the mistake of telling my daughter’s 4th grade teacher that new math made no sense. She mistook this to mean that he did not understand it and has made an example of him ever since. “Did you know that Alix’s father doesn’t understand new math?” she would say. I would actually like to point out to her that Jeffrey could run veritable circles around her in the math department and make her look like a blithering idiot. I won’t do this of course, because that wouldn’t be nice. That doesn’t stop me from thinking about it though.

Ok, so what’s the point you are asking right? Get to it already – for goodness sake, you people don’t have all day to read my musings – or ravings – depending upon how you look a it. The site above is really a very interesting link to a lot of information and resources that I think would be useful for research – whether you are trying to figure out new math, old math, research potential opportunities, identify museums to visit, or a whole host of other things. Check it out. You will see what I mean.

Personally, I am going to stay away from the math thing. It’s definitely not my strong suit. English? Well, that’s another matter entirely.

Enjoy and Happy Searching!
