How Searching for an IT Job is Different than Searching for Any Other Job - Guest Post

Careers Done Write is pleased to have a partnership with a well respected IT recruitment firm. As part of this partnership, AVID has written a blog post for us to share with the CDW readers. I hope you find their post informative.

Are you making a change and moving into the IT job market, or perhaps this is your first entry into the field and the job market overall?  The general advice you’ve gotten regarding your job search doesn’t apply perfectly to the search you’re about to embark on.  Consider these five IT-specific tips for your job search.
  1. The IT job market, unlike most other job markets right now, is a candidate’s market.  You can be a bit more selective and more aggressive in your negotiations and requirements.  Take advantage of that.
  2. Make sure your certifications are up to date.  Certifications are far more common in IT than other fields and sometimes they can make the difference between “got the job” and “you were a close second to the candidate we picked.”
  3. Study up on your material.  Sometimes interviews for IT jobs can include tests, oral and written.  Often you’ll be warned about the tests in advance and you can study appropriate materials to be ready for them.  Even if you aren’t warned ahead of time, making sure you’ve perused pertinent material recently can make a big difference in your performance.
  4. Be a team player and be ready to demonstrate that even in the interview.  Some IT jobs can require great chemistry with an existing team.  Companies that really prize that chemistry will actually have you meet and be evaluated by existing team members.  Be ready to be charming and cooperative.
  5. Lastly, consider contacting a recruiting firm.  Contracting can pay off well in IT and the myriad of jobs makes contracting a far less risky endeavor in this field.  AVID Technical Resources has offices in NY, Boston, CA, and RI and is ready to help you find your dream IT job.  Check us out today
