University Job Search Strategies
Deb,
Q. I think the resume and cover look great. You did a marvelous job!
Give me some advice please. I want to get this resume out to a large number of grad schools and universities that might have openings for online faculty (which are almost always part-time jobs) as well as those that might have full-time openings. I have a list of 5 - 10 schools I know I want to target, but there are many more out there that might have openings.
Do your clients use anything résumé blasting services? What do you recommend? TC, Arizona
A. I don’t believe that universities would be accepting résumés from any of the résumé blasting services, as this is not something they would typically do. The University of Texas has a great state by state database of universities with direct links to each institution at the following website: http://www.utexas.edu/world/univ/state/.
To conduct a thorough job search, I recommend you click on the home page link of each university you have interest in and scroll to the bottom of the page to look for a link to faculty careers. Next, you will want to look for a phone number and call to get the name of a person you can send your résumé to, including a fax number and email address. Optimally this should be a senior level administrator in charge of hiring professors, but an HR Director will be fine too. I realize this may be a time consuming and cumbersome, but if you commit to contacting a certain number of schools each day, you will be able to make progress in identifying hidden career opportunities. Keep a spreadsheet with names, dates, contact info, etc. so you can follow up.
To search for online jobs specific to academia, you may want to visit the following websites: www.universityjobs.com, www.higheredjobs.com, and www.univjobs.com. Happy Hunting!
