The Rebound Job

After a long relationship comes to an end, sometimes a rebound relationship helps you get back on your feet.  It may not be the love of your life, but it’s a friendly and fun relationship to help you heal.  Smart people recognize the rebound relationship for what it is, so nobody gets hurt.  Sometimes that relationship develops into the love of your life.

That same concept can help you rebound after a job loss.  Any loss requires healing.  A rebound job can help you heal, replace part of your income, develop new skills, learn about a new industry, and make you more attractive to potential employers.   In a challenging job market, it may take several months to find your ideal job.  Taking a job until the ideal position comes along could be the right choice for you.  This could be in the form of a contract position, a long-term assignment through a temporary agency, or a permanent job.  If it's a permanent job, it is arguably unethical to take a job knowing you may leave within a year.  However, you could find a permanent job with long-term opportunities for advancement into your ideal job.  Being honest with the company is best for both of you.

If you opt for a rebound job, make the most of your time in the position.  Learn and network as much as possible.  If you are in a temporary position, continue to actively search for your target job.  If you take a lower-level position in a company hoping to move up to your target job, stay in touch with the decision makers and HR manager so you can adequately develop any skills or knowledge required for the job.

Losing a job can be tough. Good luck as you bounce back!  For more blog entries on job searching, check out these links:
