Should I Work on Holidays

Dear Deb,

Q. My boss just came to me and asked me to work on Monday, which is a holiday - my family had plans to go away for the long weekend.  It's not like we have any looming deadlines, she is trying to get us caught up on some projects. Should I do it?  –J.W., New Jersey

A.  NO! All kidding aside while it might be reasonable to ask employees to put in some extra time to hit a tight deadline for a  deliverable, giving you no notice is unfair and unreasonable.  And while the focus of our blog and our company is helping you support your career goals, we are  big proponents of work/life balance, as well.  In fact, one of the reasons this Ask Deb is so short is the following:  I am banging out for the weekend with my family - go enjoy yourself!
