Relocation Strategy: Getting an Interview

Sometimes in a challenging job market, you must go where the job are.  Relocation is stressful and costly, but you can minimize the risks if you follow a disciplined approach.  There are multiple things to consider after you have accepted the job in a new city.  However, today we are focusing on how to get a face-to-face interview with employers in your target city.  With proper preparation, you have a better shot at getting an interview. You will also be poised to make an informed decision when offered a job  and less likely to regret your decision down the road.

Research, Target, & Research Some More

Establish the criteria for your target company. Conduct research to uncover employers who meet your criteria. Create a target list of 20 to 30 employers in your destination city.  Uncover key people to contact.  Read the local business news.  Round things out by doing online research on sites, such as Hoover.com, CareerInfoNet.org, and Vault.com.  Review job postings online on a site like Indeed.com.

Networking

This is your best bet for making a connection.  Get involved with your professional associations and don’t forget to access members via the association’s membership directory.  When making your plans to visit your target city, try to align your trip with local career fairs, professional conferences, or trade shows. This could be a networking bonanza.  Utilize social media (LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook) to uncover contacts at your target companies.

Outreach

Email and follow with a telephone call to the employers on your target list. Contact recruiters specializing in your target region and industry.  Let the employers and recruiters know that you will be in their area on particular dates and ask if they would have time for a brief informational interview.

Scouting

Make at least one scouting trip to your city.  While there explore the city to be sure this is where you want to live.  Test the commuting options.  If you have children, visit local schools and study the real estate prospects. Most importantly, conduct informational interviews at your target companies.

Follow these steps diligently and you will likely get your foot in the door at several companies on your target list, as well as valuable networking contacts.  If you would like more information on this subject, check out these blog entries:
