Listing Technical Skills on Your Resume
Dear Deb:
Should I list all of my technical knowledge on my resume? My current resume has extended into three pages, and I have a half page listing all of my technical proficiencies. What’s the best strategy? Is it better to have three pages with all of my skills from the last 16 years? Or, should I trim it down to two pages with less technical skills.
Thanks for your help,
Max
Dear Max:
I am glad you wrote about this very common issue. The guideline is to have a resume that is long enough to cover the top skills and accomplishments that promote you for your target job. Regarding your technical skills: it is important to identify the technical skills required or those that are beneficial to your targeted job. Examine your list and remove technologies not relevant to the target, as well as antiquated technologies. This is effective because it allows your most valuable skills to be showcased rather than being hidden among a half-page list.
If you have other questions about your resume, please feel free to write me. I would be happy to assist you.
All the best!
Deb
