Career Profile: Human Resources Manager

Have you considered a career as a human resource manager?  Human resource managers oversee activities involving the selection, training, and retention of qualified employees.  This involves management of staffing strategies, recruitment, compensation and benefits, training and development, employee welfare, regulatory compliance (such as EEO), and labor relations. It was reported in May 2011 by the Bureau of Labor Statistics that the top 10% of human resource managers earn $166,000+.

The outlook for human resource managers is good according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.  Employment of human resource managers is expected to grow by 22% between 2008 and 2018, a rate higher than that of all occupations combined.  The increase is expected because of new legislation that impacts various aspects of human resources, including benefits, healthcare plans, and family leave requirements.

A college degree in human resource management or labor relations may be required.  Many positions request or require certifications from respected industry associations, such as Professional in Human Resources Association. Often there is a progression from a human resource generalist position upward to various specialist roles or to a management role, depending on the size and structure of the company. This time for the progression varies, but could take several years.
