Using Your Full Name

Dear Deb:

I rarely use my entire name, but I would like to on my resume so that I am easily identifiable when someone searches for my transcript or GMAT scores.   My name is Michael Alban Adams Jr.  My son’s (only six months old, but it may matter someday) name is Michael Alban Adams, III.   What is the proper way to state this?  Do I add a comma before the Jr. and III?  I have seen it both ways.

Sincerely,

Michael

Dear Michael:

Great question.  I referred to The Chicago Manual of Style to verify that I give you the correct answer.  The answer is that you would not use a comma in either situation.  So, it would be “Michael Alban Adams Jr.” and “Michael Alban Adams III.”

It is true that some people will write it with a comma.  It is best to follow the grammar rules and standards from a respected style guide.  Sometimes, practices become accepted because so many people use incorrect grammar. I could list numerous cases of incorrect grammar commonly seen on advertisements, menus, and even business signs.  The people who know grammar (and many of them are resume readers and hiring managers) will likely know the correct way.

Thanks for writing!  All the best to you and your son.

Deb
