Résumé Help: Gaps in Employment

Today’s candidate has gaps between each of her four jobs spanning six years.  That can be a problem.  It shows that her jobs are ending not by her choice; she is either terminated or laid off 100% of the time. That can be an interview-blocker.  The best way to handle this is to show the years only on her résumé.  You can see in the example below that instead of “2/2010 to 11/2010,” we simply state “2010.” It is acceptable to show years only on a résumé.

The second issue is a very common one that we discuss in the Résumé Help blogs - weak bullet points.  In this résumé we see an inkling of a result, usually buried at the end of the line.  That’s an easy fix! We can re-word the bulleted statement to lead with the result.  Also, if the candidate can quantify the result, it will make the statement stronger.
