Do I Really Need to Buy a New Suit?
Dear Deb:
My company lost a major contract. So, they have a forced reduction in work hours for all engineers. It’s been really tough to take a 10% cut in pay. I am looking for a job because this company is going nowhere fast.
I am seriously in need of a professional suit and shoes. I got this job at a campus job fair wearing khakis and I do not own a suit. I just don’t have the extra money. And, I don’t want to open a credit card. I’m saving for a down payment on a house. Do you think employers would understand if I am not the most impeccably-dressed candidate at an interview?
My girlfriend feels I would be eliminated just because I am not dressed well. She works in retail, so she’s biased.
What do you think?
Thanks,
Kirk
Dear Kirk:
You are smart for being proactive in your job search. You may not like what I say next. You will need to purchase a professional suit and shoes. You don’t have to spend a fortune, so it should not be a major set-back to your savings plan. A good quality suit may start at $700. An excellent quality, designer suit will run much more. For your purposes, you will be fine in a suit from a national chain that specializes in discount pricing. I just checked online and you can find a suit on sale for $229. Choose a color that you can wear year round, like a charcoal. Wool is a good fabric choice. Be sure to shop at a store that offers professional tailoring service so the suit fits you well. Suitable leather shoes will cost you between $80 and $100. After you get the job, you can build your wardrobe with finer selections. One last tip…always be sure to have your shirt professionally cleaned/pressed and your shoes shined to perfection. Don’t skimp on the care of your new wardrobe and it should hold up well.
Trust me, Kirk. You will want to wear a professional suit and shoes. It is worth the $300-325 that you spend. Your girlfriend might also appreciate a night out with you wearing your new suit! I wish you all the best in your career!
