Résumé Help: Choose Your Words Carefully

Luis has had an impressive career spanning 25 years.  He has controlled large budgets and high-profile operations in an international setting. However, his profile is so busy and cluttered that it discourages reading.  After drudging through the words, I found much repetition and overlap.  Streamlining the summary language would be a great first step to turn this résumé around.

Secondly, Luis has a small paragraph for each of his jobs. Many of his descriptions are bogged down with very routine information.  It would be wise to trim down the functional information and add some strong accomplishments. Also, Luis needs to replace the soft passive verbs and opening lines with exciting, pointed action verbs.

For the purpose of this illustration, we did not show the entire résumé. We cut out the middle jobs. We did show the first job that Luis had on his résumé.  We advised Luis to only show ten to fifteen years of experience.  Showing his full experience can actually decrease his interview invitation rate.  Employers are most interested in the recent history.

Lastly, there are several very long phrases or sentences in the résumé, as well as inconsistencies and typographical errors.  Luis would benefit from a strong rewrite and effective proofreading.
