Relocating Without a Job

Debra WheatmanDear Deb:

I am relocating without a job. How do I job search from 800 miles away?

Thank you for your advice.

Aaron

Dear Aaron:

In a relocation, it is helpful to include some details in your cover letter to prove that you are serious about relocation. That includes a reason why you are relocating. Reasons may include following a spouse, returning to your hometown, or moving to be closer to family. If you have an anchor in the new town, you are more likely to stay, and employers are more apt to take a chance on you (as an out of area candidate).

There is no need to state your relocation plans on a resume. However, if you have a second address in plane-flying-globeyour target city, add that address to your resume. Some employers’ search criteria may be a zip code range for candidates. It is also another way to tie you to that city. On LinkedIn, you can change your zip code to the zip code of the target location so that your profile is offered as a result when employers use a zip code range as search criteria.

Also, plan a scouting trip to the target area. Let the employer know in the letter the week you plan to be in town. Try to write to as many employers as possible and schedule multiple interviews. It shows the employer that are serious and also in demand (because you are meeting with multiple target employers).

All the best,

Deb
