One Part Achievement, One Part Creativity and Stir

Given that times are changing and many people are looking for work, I thought it would be timely to post a blog regarding career change. Since many folks have been laid off due to economic conditions, I am in contact daily with people who are looking for other types of positions from what they were previously doing. As a résumé expert, I would like to share some ideas with you regarding an appropriate résumé style for career changers.

Introducing the hybrid résumé
The modified hybrid résumé is a great way to set up your résumé if you are making a transition from one job or even one career to another. It allows you to reference specific instances and achievements at the top of the document that help the reader create a connection between what you did in a previous (and sometimes unrelated role) and what you can deliver in a new role. I know you are all aware of the traditional reverse chronological résumé. That works best if you are remaining in your current field, but perhaps not as applicable when making a change.

Sample hybrid résumé
To the left you can see a sample of a hybrid résumé that illustrates my point (click the images for full size). As you will see, on this document, I created a summary at the top and core competencies section that will allow the reader to quickly scan for key words. The next section (and this is critical) reveals relevant accomplishments that will position this applicant to assume other roles that are not necessarily related to the field from which she hails. This client was interested in transitioning to a position within the non-profit arena. A recent (but short) position in non-profit is used to populate the highlights section, and the remaining professional experience follows.

I hope this sample is helpful and provides you with a new perspective on how your new and improved transition documents can look and sell you for an interesting role!
