Old School Networking – It Still Works
We at Careers Done Write always talk about the importance of networking – certainly in this day and age there is a big focus on digital networking, social media, and all things kind of, well, non-personal.
Here is a guy - http://tinyurl.com/3cmaapl that shows the old-fashioned way still provides benefits. Over the last 15 years, Harold has sent 4,800 messages in bottles and gotten a whopping 3,100 responses – 64%. How does that compare to your networking responses?
Don’t misunderstand – we are not suggesting that you throw bottles with resumes in the ocean, because the only job you will get that way is fry-cook at the Krusty Krab, but we do strongly believe that old-fashion approaches can work.
So, two takeaways – (1) Don’t just sit in front of your computer using LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, etc. Get cleaned up and get yourself out there. (2) Make it interesting – one of the reasons Harold gets such a good response is likely related to the fact that the notes are on fluorescent paper – they capture attention and drive action.
Good luck and good hunting!
