How do I Ensure that I leave a Job on Good Terms?
Dear Deb:
I have been offered a new job with a greater chance for promotions. I think it will be a big surprise to my manager. She has been a mentor to me over the last five years and I want to be sure I do not burn a bridge with her or the company. How do I ensure that I leave on good terms?
Thank you,
Maria
Dear Maria:
Congratulations on your new job! The best way to handle your termination is to craft a letter thanking your manager for her support, advice, and opportunities over the last five years. Explain how much you have learned and this has prepared you for new opportunities and that you have accepted a new position. Do not email the letter. Instead, ask your manager for a time to meet privately. Give two weeks of notice and communicate your termination in person. Also, ask how you can make the transition easier for her and the company. For example, you may offer to document your work processes on open projects.
Your sincere appreciation and offer to make the transition easier should go a long way toward preserving your relationship with your manager and the company.
Wishing you all the best,
Deb
