Career Change over 50

Hello, Happy New Year,

Would you recommend Social Media for someone over 50 looking for a career change?  If so why?

Nick

Happy New Year, Nick!

Absolutely, social media is a critical component in your career at any age.  It is especially important for age 50+ professionals so you remain relevant.  Social media is mainstream.  Communication and communication methods/devices are rapidly-changing.  What I mean is that Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, Pinterest, and Instagram, etc. are hot today, but we also need to keep our eyes on what technologies and communication platforms are emerging. We must stay current.

The benefit of participating in social media is access to information about products, industries, job openings, and company decision makers.  If your profile is crafted properly, your participation can put you on the radar for new opportunities. Using social media to network can facilitate relationship building.

The danger of not being a part of social media is that you will seem less relevant in the work force.  So, take some time and get to know the social media sites I mentioned above. Each one has helpful resources to get you acquainted.  Be sure you really understand how it all works before you post anything.  Also, avoid any awkward initial messages, such as “Hello, I am now a part social media.”  Just cruise on in like an insider that’s hip to the whole scene.  When you are connected, be sure to check our my Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn pages!
