Brand Building Targets
If you have not yet started to define and build your brand, the time has come for you to get moving! Simply stated, your personal brand is how others perceive you based on your qualities, demonstrated knowledge, skills and expertise. These qualities include your image, behavior, accomplishments, social media presence, and the way in which you share information. Whether or not you are cognizant of your brand, you have a brand based on others’ perceptions of you. Ideally, your perceived brand is aligned with your designed brand. The good news is you can create a plan to build the brand you desire.
Associates
Those with whom you associate contribute to your brand perception. If you regularly partner-up with the person on the team who never quite makes his goal, that reputation could leave a negative impact on you. Don’t fall into the trap of aligning with the underdog. It’s nice to give a helping hand. However, you need to exercise care when aligning yourself with people that don’t hold up their end of the bargain. It is possible that you could become a “victim by association.” Instead, connect with fellow rising stars and superstars.
Organizations
Professionals who are serious about their career growth and prospects participate in industry associations. This is an excellent way to network, remain current on industry trends, and gain leadership skills.
Credentials
In almost every industry, there are professional designations and certifications. These credentials are generally obtained through extensive formal training and testing under the sponsorship of an association or university with authority on the subject. Conduct research to uncover the credentials that are highly-regarded in your industry. Once identified, do self-directed research to determine if securing a new credential will help grow your brand and your future career prospects.
Professional Development Courses
Are you attempting a change or pursuing more growth in your career? Often this requires that you step up your game and gain new skills and knowledge. Resources for courses include professional associations, local colleges, and online education programs. Consider taking courses that lead to a certificate or degree.
Additional Experience
In some situations, you may need to go beyond your primary job to build skills to enhance your brand. For example, perhaps you want to be branded as an inspirational and competent leader. How can you prove that element of your brand if your job does not involve leadership? The answer is to seek roles in your professional associations, civic organizations, and charities.
The Bottom Line
You have two choices when it comes to your brand. You can be passive and let others define you based on their experiences with you. Or, you can be proactive, define your brand, and resolutely build the personal brand you desire. When you take charge of your brand, you also take control of your career.
