Beyond LinkedIn, Twitter and your online job search
Q: I have been using the internet as the primary method to conducting my job search; but I am not receiving very many calls for interviews. Can you give me some other ideas to help move my search along?
A: The internet should not serve as the primary way you search for opportunities. In many ways, the internet is a black hole ala Calcutta. You have no idea who is monitoring the ‘box’ where you send your résumé, or if anyone is even looking. A better and more appropriate way to source for opportunities is to leverage your network of friends and family to see if they know of anyone or any opportunities that might be right for you. If you are not using LinkedIN, I suggest putting up a profile (with a picture) and begin connection to people. Don’t be afraid to send mail to people in your network to exchange ideas and share information; equally important you should respond to questions or start discussions of your own to engage the LinkedIN community. Since you want to continue to grow your network, consider joining one or more related professional associations and / or volunteer groups. You will certainly meet new people, expand your horizons, and quite possibly meet someone that can facilitate your search – not to mention the personal gratification you will no doubt get from your involvement.
