Actors & Cheaters Need Not Apply

I stumbled upon an interesting article in the WSJ on line earlier today that brought me swiftly back to high school where classmates would clandestinely review smudged words and calculations on sweaty palms in a futile attempt to gain extra points on a test that they were ill-prepared to take. This article was about standardized online personality profiles that retailers are giving to determine candidates’ fit within their environment.

With the competition for jobs fierce and rising unemployment it’s a no-holds-barred game to get the job. For some people, making ends meet is the focus, and quite frankly they don’t care what they need to do as long as they can pay bills and feed their kids. Can’t say I blame them.

Anyway, this article discussed personality tests that are given to potential applicants and how people are circumventing the system – fairly easily, I might add.

To Cheat or Not To Cheat

With the ongoing and pervasive use of Internet tools, test answers are showing up on places like Wikipedia and even FaceBook. As we all know, when there’s a will, there’s a way; and it is becoming increasingly evident that there is no such thing as a secret if more than one person is involved. It was bound to happen that answers to these personality tests would be made public and candidates would use the information for their own devices. After all, if you find yourself out of work and need an income what would you do to keep the cash flow coming?

My opinion of these tests notwithstanding, they do reveal that turnover decreases when applicants who truthfully complete them are hired.
