Time off for Teacher Conference?

Dear Debra:

My child has parent-teacher conferences twice a year.  The other two managers never ask for time off for their kids’ events or conferences.  I am so conflicted because I just got this job two months ago.

Thanks!

Carrie

Dear Carrie:

These conferences are important.  In fact, some states have laws in connection with time off for parent-teacher conferences. I’m not suggesting that you quote the law here.  My point is that our society values these conferences so you are not asking for anything unusual.   Get the schedule for conferences as soon as possible. Sign up for a time as late in the day as you possibly can and try to avoid conflicts with pre-scheduled work meetings.  Then ask for the time away, letting your manager know that you will make up the time later.  It should be fine.

Also, don’t worry about what the other two managers do.  They may have spouses or grandparents who attend on their behalf. Or, their child may attend a school that holds conferences in the evening.

Thank you for writing!

Deb
