Senior Level Job Search in 2011: Good Idea or Not?

Dear Deb,

Q. I have been at the same job for the past six years; while I am comfortable, I would like to take my career to the next level.  However, I am concerned that there are no jobs out there. The news reports are so dismal.  I am wondering if I should keep waiting until things improve. What have you been seeing in the marketplace? Are senior level candidates getting hired at all or is everything at a standstill?  - JM, Arizona

A. LifeInc.com, in conjunction with Today, recently reported an interesting statistic that many senior level candidates may not be aware of.  While total unemployment has been hovering in the 9%+ range, unemployment for white-collar jobs is only at 6%.  Historically white collar jobs have had lower unemployment rates and admittedly this is the highest rate since the early 80’s.  However, all things considered, that is still a relatively low number.

Many of the clients I work with are getting interviews as well as job offers.  I frequently get emails and LinkedIn updates that inform me people are getting hired. My advice to you is to get your career documents in order and do a confidential search to a select group of prospective companies.

Do your due diligence and identify hiring managers through your extended network and via the Internet. Send targeted communications to seek out positions that will provide job advancement.  Research companies carefully by using resources like Hoovers and Glassdoor. Don’t jump ship unless you are absolutely sure the next move is the right one.
