Résumé Help – Vice President of Counsel, Financial Services

Today’s Résumé Help focuses on a Vice President who provides legal counsel within the financial services sector.  He has made an attempt to create a résumé that is aesthetically pleasing, but had forgotten that content is king.  While visual appeal is certainly important, a lack of detailed content can be detrimental when creating a résumé.

James has over 20 years experience as a lawyer, but he has put together a very brief 1 page résumé with substantial spacing between bullet points.  There is not enough information to allow the reader to understand the depth and breadth of James’ experience.  He neglected to add any significant achievements to his document.  As he competes with others in the employment pool, James will appear mediocre and average.

After conducting a thorough strategy session with James, we learned that he has achieved many outstanding feats that have saved his company significant amounts of money and prevented a variety of legal liabilities.  He is extremely well regarded by his peers and is an excellent leader, who has been able to successfully retain over 90% of his staff during a 10+ year time period.

Once James reformulated his résumé and added some additional depth, his true value as a top level executive emerged.  To see additional comments about James’ résumé that may be of help to you, please click on the image below.
