Résumé Help - Technical Operations Professional

Today’s résumé is that of an IT Operations professional with mixed experience doing a combination of project management, program management, and engineering. The first challenge this résumé has is the poor use of space. There is an unusual amount of white space at the top of the first page and the overall visual appeal of this résumé needs considerable improvement. At 5 pages long, this résumé needs a full overhaul to improve the readability and position the candidate, whom we shall call Joanna, in a way that brands her in a much more professional light.

One of the worst mistakes that Joanna has made is listing her college experience at the University of South Florida as being located in Tampa, LA.  Tampa is in FL, not LA. This is an embarrassing mistake Joanna cannot afford to make.  In addition, she mentions her high school. This is unnecessary as she has been out of school for many years. Her education should appear at the bottom of her résumé rather than the top. She also needs to list her degrees or courses of study.

Joanna has also created a laundry list of technical skills that is difficult to read due to the layout.  She needs to generate interest on page 1 by creating a comprehensive professional summary, developing a powerful headline, and repositioning her technical skills and core competencies.
