Resume Help - Education Section Format

Hello again readers:

Following is a look at the 3rd part of the résumé which typically includes education, training, certifications, and affiliations.  Meet James. This is the education, activities and community service section of his résumé.

Overall Impression: Weak presentation.

Reason: In addition to punctuation errors, James has used improper verb tenses and pronouns. He is providing information that does not add value on his résumé and the presentation of his information should be more concise.

Changes Required:  James needs to eliminate unnecessary information, correct punctuation and grammar errors and present the information in a more professional manner.  He initially had his education section towards the top of his résumé, but has 6 years of work experience, so it is time for him to move his professional experience up and bring his education section down to the bottom portion of the résumé.

General Comments: James cannot afford to make blatant errors on his résumé. This is his primary marketing piece and his first chance to shine.  If he is careless on his résumé, how will he perform as an employee?

The overall layout of his information is bland and uninspiring. James should consider using a more modern font and modify the layout to achieve a stronger impact.  The goal should be to improve readability while adding polish and a higher level of professionalism.

James needs to carefully consider whether the information he includes in this section of his résumé is valuable to the prospective hiring manager.  When he first graduated from college and had no work experience, James likely used this as filler content.  Now that he has substantial real life work experience, the information should be streamlined and captured in an abbreviated format on the résumé.
