When to Disclose Pregnancy

Dear Deb,

After applying for a job recently I found out I'm pregnant. I was 7 weeks along when called for an interview then after a great interview I was told an offer is on its way. I'm struggling with when to disclose my pregnancy. I have a history of miscarriage so ideally I wouldn't say anything until I'm through the first trimester, however I don't want to seem dishonest and set a poor tone for my relationship with coworkers moving forward. I have no reason to believe that I will have problems moving through this pregnancy, as I worked right up until I went into labor for my first born. The dilemma is, I fear I will risk being selected if I tell them in advance. I would appreciate your thoughts.

Thank you.

Avril

Dear Avril:

Congratulations on the job and the baby.

You are not obligated to disclose that you are pregnant.  I would recommend that you do not reveal that information during the interview process.  The most cautious approach would be to hold back on sharing the information until your first trimester is complete.  However, a middle ground approach would be fine. A middle ground approach would be to wait until you have accepted the written offer for the job. At that time, share that you are pregnant but that it will not impact your job performance. You can add that with your first child, you worked up until the delivery and returned to work. Avoid precise promises of days or weeks before/after the delivery that you will work.
