Showing results on a résumé

Dear Debra:

I have read in your blog that it is important to show measured results, such as sales figures.  I don’t have records going back through my entire eight-year history; can I make an estimate?  Or should I just say that I increased sales?

Thanks in advance for your advice!

Rick

Dear Rick,

Yes, it is perfectly alright to show an estimate if you do not have an exact figure. It is much better than showing no figure at all.  For example, you would write, “Raised sales of product XYZ by approximately 15% within my first year as sales director.”  In your occupation especially, it is vital to show results. Past results are the best indication of future success.

Thank you for writing, Rick!

Sincerely,

Deb
