Should My Employer Cover My Training Costs?

Dear Deb:

My manager suggested that I get a certification in a software application that I commonly use.  It is an online course.  The website indicates that program will take two months if I apply about ten hours per week in the coursework and exam preparation.  My manager has not offered to pay for the $399 course and has suggested that I complete the program on my personal time.  I work about 50 hours per week.   Should I be expected to work another ten hours at home?   I don’t know the norm.  If this is what I must do to get ahead, I’ll do it.  On the other hand, I don’t wish to weaken my brand. I feel like my manager is taking advantage of me.

What do you suggest?

Thank you,

Harrison

Dear Harrison:

This is an excellent question.  Thank you for writing.

Many employers pay for coursework directly related to the employee’s job.  Before talking to your manager, review your employee manual or employee portal to find out if the company has a policy regarding professional development courses.  That may answer the first part of your question (the reimbursement).  If there is no policy, let your manager know that you are very interested in the course.  Then ask if the company will be covering the cost of the course and materials.

Based on what you shared, it seems like this course would be helpful. So, if the company does not pay for the course, consider paying for it if you can afford it.   This may be an excellent investment in your career with this company and beyond.

You are also concerned about the hours to study.  I would recommend using three to four of your weekly lunch breaks to study.  If you take the train to work, that could be more study time.  In addition to your three hours of lunch break time, you can probably carve out the other seven hours one evening per week and on a weekend day.  It is common for motivated professionals to spend personal time to enhance their professional knowledge and skills.  I would not address the time requirement with your manager.  If there is a certification exam, it would be appropriate to ask to take that exam during work hours.

All the best,

Deb
