Résumé Help: What Value Do You Bring?

The hiring manager has one major question. What value do you bring? You have but a few seconds to deliver that answer via examples on your résumé. The hiring manager is not interested in a long list of general tasks.  This résumé is a list of very vague, and in some cases, incomprehensible bullet points. None show the real value that this candidate offers.  Many examples on the list hint that there may be more to the story.  The reader will not take the time to contact the candidate to ask.  Why should they when they have plenty of candidates who properly articulate the value through concise statements of accomplishments?  We can easily correct this issue for today’s client.

1.)    Create a three to four-line profile to showcase the relevant skills and experience of the candidate.

2.)    Following the profile, prepare a core competencies section.  Instead of a long bulleted list, we are going to carve out nine competencies that relate to the hiring manager’s needs.  For example, I surmise that the candidate may be competent at: Product Assessment, Strategic Planning, Marketing & Promotions, Import & Export Operations, Staff Training, Trade Missions & Shows, Operations Management, Risk Mitigation, and Contract Negotiations.

3.)    Next we present the professional experience category with experience listed under each company name/job title.  Here is where we show the scope of his responsibility and major accomplishments for each job.  We especially want to feature the measured results achieved.

By using this vague bulleted list as a starting point, the candidate can brainstorm to bring out the real value he offers.  By categorizing this information, it becomes easy for the hiring manager to scan the résumé and identify the candidate’s value   What value do you bring?   Follow the above tips to create a compelling new résumé.  If you wish to read more tips on this subject, check out these blog entries:
