Resume Help - Senior Technology Executive
Today’s résumé critique will focus on a senior level professional in the software industry. This particular candidate, we will call him George, is looking for a role focused on sales management, although you can hardly tell this from his résumé.
George has had a varied background that also includes business process optimization, so his experience is somewhat unique. However, his headline dubs him an Enterprise Software Technology Specialist with Technology and Business expertise.
This is hardly the ideal title for someone who is searching to find a Sales Management role with business operations components. This strikes me as the résumé of a technical guru with some business experience. As an example, a headline that reads ‘Executive Level Software Sales & Operations Management’ would be more in line with George’s goals.
This résumé also needs a better layout. It is unimpressive at best. The bulleted list is hard to read, poorly worded, and again, not a reflection of the core skills George should be promoting. If George can create a summary, he will give the reader a better flavor for his strengths. Résumé writing is unfortunately not his forté.
At his level, George should not be making the grammatical mistakes that are on his résumé. He has periods where they don’t belong and is missing periods where they do belong. George has an extra space that doesn’t belong and he also has over-bulleted his résumé. Instead of using so many bullets, George should write a brief paragraph highlighting his duties and use bullets to list accomplishments.
George also made the common error of using the word lead rather than led twice in his resume. Not a great mistake when you are trying to impress C-level hiring managers. Given that George is at the Vice Presidential level, this is potentially embarrassing.
