Resume Help - Sales Manager in Transition

Today’s résumé help is for a client who is seeking to expand his career options while taking advantage of his strong sales and marketing background.  He mistakenly mentions a variety of different areas of expertise in an effort to brand himself.  However, he is only succeeding in confusing the reader. By listing so many different strengths, he appears to be a jack of all trades. It is unclear what he really wants to do with his career.

It is critical for John to focus on one or two key areas of expertise rather than bombarding the reader with everything he does in the headline.  He should customize his résumé for each opportunity.  He can keep the core content the same and modify it just a bit to slant the résumé depending upon the role he is applying for.

John can do this by keeping his headline simple. He can then add information regarding his specific expertise underneath the headline to brand himself on a case by case basis.
