Resume Help: Editing Your Profile
Mina has several good concepts in her profile area. However, the entire profile area requires a thorough edit. Additionally, updating the style of her resume is important. As a graphic designer, she will be judged by the appearance of her resume. Today, we will tackle the issue of editing the content.
The profile statement is a summary at the top of the resume that communicates a candidate’s top values as they relate to the needs of the prospective employer. In most cases it is a three to five-line narrative. It is a series of phrases, written in third person. The most effective profiles capture unique skills, knowledge, and accomplishments that distinguish the candidate from other candidates. Avoid cliches and fluffy language.
These are the recommendations for Mina’s profile:
* Delete the phrases that are weak (“self-motivator with strong organizational skills,” and “demonstrated team player”) and replace with information with a greater impact.
* Many of the phrases in Mina’s profile are awkward. It appears as though the resume was not proofread carefully. Major mistakes like that will give the impression that Mina has poor writing skills or that she is a sloppy proofreader.
* Mina has touched upon the skills that are important to the hiring employer. However, in some cases she undersells her skills. Words like “can” and “familiar with” indicate she has the skills of a beginner. In reality, she has more than ten years of experience. Mina should use stronger words and tell more about the scope of her projects.
With these changes, Mina’s resume will capture the reader’s attention and compel her to continue reading. If you are struggling to edit your resume profile, contact me. In the meantime, check out these blog entries for more on the subject.
