Résumé Help – Commercial Insurance Professional
We hope you are enjoying our Résumé Help blog which appears every Monday on the Careers Done Write website. Today we are reviewing the résumé of an expert in the Property & Casualty space. Mark is experienced in a variety of key areas within the insurance industry. He has been a high level consultant, but his résumé seems less than professional for one glaring reason above all others.
Mark has chosen an aqua marine blue to separate his résumé sections. I am not against the use of color and have had great results with accent colors that add aesthetic value to a résumé. However, this particular shade of blue is fluorescent and does not convey the caliber of professionalism that Mark wants to get across.
Additionally, Mark has used the first person. This is a common mistake. However, a résumé is a formal document and should never use I, me, or my. Personal pronouns are perfectly acceptable on a cover letter. Given that Mark has worn many different hats, I recommend he brand his résumé with a strong headline which can be modified depending upon the role he seeks. In this way, he will lead the reader to a better understanding of the position he is focused on. Otherwise, he may leave an impression that he is a jack of all trades and master of none.
