Résumé Help – Business Management Candidate

Today we are showcasing the résumé of candidate who does not have a clear path in terms of his work history. He included a summary, which I omitted so we can focus on the Experience section of his résumé. He neglected to create a concise headline and the summary he has written does not steer the reader in any specific direction. As a result, I am left wondering what this candidate is interested in doing.

He put his Education high on the résumé. This was possibly because he graduated in 2009 with an MBA. Given that he has been in the workforce since 2000, he should reference his education at the bottom and mention his MBA in his summary statement.

I removed the actual bullet points from each job in order to show you his different roles; but his bulleted items lacked substance. They vaguely described what he did and there were very few references to achievements; none of his accomplishments were quantified in any meaningful way.

One of the challenges this candidate faces is in positioning. Because he has held a variety of different roles, this can confuse the reader. He would benefit from a core competency section that highlights his most critical business strengths. He may even want to consider a Selected Achievements section before his experience to pull out some of the important things he did earlier in his career since has held 6 positions since 2000.  This section could focus on those duties and accomplishments that represent his ability to serve in a management capacity.
