Relocating for a Spouse

Dear Deb:

I am leaving a job and relocating to a new state because my husband has a new job.  What do I write on my resume and LinkedIn profile?  Does it make me seem less professional to leave for my husband’s opportunity?

Thank you,

Indira

Dear Indira:

It is very common for someone to leave a job to relocate due to a spouse’s job.   It does not make you less professional to leave your job for your husband’s opportunity.  The next time around, it may be your husband who makes a sacrifice for your opportunity.   With that said, you will want to handle the situation properly.  First, inform your manager as soon as you know the relocation is definite.   Arrange to provide a reasonable notice so you can help your employer with the transition. For example, you may be helpful in training your replacement or creating notes regarding current projects.

Regarding your resume and LinkedIn profile:   Keep the “to Present” status as long as you can.  If you can extend the time at your current job while your husband starts the move early, do it. Those candidates that are have better success.  After you have left, you will need to change that job to past tense language and add an ending date for that position.  Do this on LinkedIn and the resume. You can include a very simple one-line statement for your last position, such as: “Resigned position due to a family relocation from Seattle to Phoenix.”

This situation is very common.  The key to success is to act quickly. Don’t hesitate to begin your job search.

Wishing you all the best!

Deb
