Reason for Leaving on Resume?
Hi Deb:
What should I say if I am asked why I left a position? I quit because I hated my boss and I could afford to take time off work to be a stay-at-home mom for a year. Now, I need to get back to work and start earning money. I don’t want to lie. What’s the best way to handle this?
Thanks,
Ivanya
Dear Ivanya:
Lying is never an option. Lies have a way of catching up with people. However, you can give a better explanation of your situation. For example, you might say: “I left ABC Company to take a year off to stay at home with my children. Now that my children are a bit older, I am excited to get back to my career.” You are not lying because you did take time off with your kids. However, there is no need to share every aspect of your motivation, especially the fact that you hated your former boss!
