P.S. Statement on a Cover Letter

Dear Deb:

I read online that one should always have a “P.S.” on a cover letter/email.    If I do include a P.S. statement, what would I say?  “P.S.  I have extensive experience in CRM customization.”   What do you think?

Thank you,

Kathy S.

Dear Kathy:

I have seen advice like that online too.  Some experts feel this is a strategy to catch the reader’s attention with a strong selling point.  Old-time mass mail marketers will tell you that the P.S. statement is read 2 to 3 times and that is the reason why it is viewed as a wise ploy to reach your reader.  Many experts, including me, feel the P.S. statement is a slightly unprofessional gimmick that does not belong on a cover letter.  Too many people associate “P.S.,” “P.S.S.,” and “But, wait there’s more!” type statements as cheesy.  This could tarnish your professional brand.

Instead, I recommend writing a cover letter tailored for each job opportunity.  Use the middle paragraph as your high-impact area.  You can use bullets or a narrative format for the middle paragraph.

Wishing you all the best!

Deb
