Is it acceptable to add some color to my resume?

Hello -

As a marketing major, I feel that my resume is very standard. I know that I can't really add any color or do much designing to it, but how can I add the "oh I should hire this girl" factor? I want to send my resume to some companies that don't have any openings so I need it to stand out. Do you have any suggestions?

Thank You in Advance,

Nadia

Hi Nadia:

I received your question via the AMA on your resume. Why do you feel you cannot add a splash of color or even a picture that is indicative of your creativity and marketing capabilities? Your resume does not have to be a generic document. In fact, it should be anything but that. You want to engage the reader with compelling content, as well as a visually appealing document that will allow you to stand out from the crowd. Make sure that your resume not only highlights responsibilities, but also those things for which you are proud. Where possible, include examples of the work done and how you made an impact. For some examples of resumes that might give you some ideas, please feel free to check this link. The samples on the CDW site might help get some of your creative juices flowing!  If you would like to speak, please feel free to contact me via email adebra@careersdonewrite.com
