Interested in the Same Position as a Friend

Dear Deb:

My friend is applying for a job that she is in no way qualified to perform.  She does not even have the basic education and knows nothing about finance, audits, or accounting.  On the other hand, I am perfect for this job.  Not only do I have the BA in Accounting, I have an MBA and have worked in the audit department at a major East Coast utility for the last 5 years.  How can I apply for this job without offending my friend?

Thanks,

Regina

Dear Regina:

I would be honest with your friend about your interest in the job.  It is not your place to tell her that she is not qualified.  If you want to remain friends, you will not broach that aspect of the subject.  However, you can talk to her privately and tell her that you have reviewed the job posting and qualifications. Tell her that you meet every qualification and this is an ideal fit.  Let her know that you wanted to tell her first because you respect her and value the friendship you share.  When you discuss the reasons why you feel you are a fit, she may notice that she is not a fit.  There is also the chance that she is not very serious about the job and is just casting a very wide net in her job search.  Contact me if I can help you navigate this issue.

Wishing you all the best in your career!

Deb
