How to explain a termination when asked in interview
Dear Debra:
I was fired in my last job as a customer service agent due to excessive tardiness and absences. What do I say if I am asked about it? I had a new baby. I learned my lesson and in my next job, I will 1) get a job closer to home, 2.) use a child care center instead of my last nanny who was unreliable, and 3.) I will not let this happen again! It’s too stressful being unemployed.
What do I say to convince them that they can trust me?
Thank you,
Charlene
Dear Charlene:
It is inspiring that you have found something good in a bad situation. You turned this into a life lesson. Based on what you have said, I trust that you have learned your lesson. It may be more difficult to convince the hiring manager.
It is best to address the issue head-on in the interview. Share that you were a new mom and having issues with child care and a commute that presented challenges. State the remedies that you have in place to prevent this from being an issue. Also, share the aspects of support that you have in place, such as family members and friends who can step in to help with your child so you can be on time, every time to work.
If you find it difficult to find a new job quickly, consider working through a temporary agency. This is a great way to earn income and re-build your reputation as a reliable worker. At the end of a temp engagement, ask each manager for a quick endorsement on LinkedIn or via email.
Wishing you all the best!
Deb
