How Long Should a Resume Be?

Debra WheatmanDear Deb:

Is it true that anything over a page means you are including too much fluff on your resume? I read that each job should consist of two to three short bullets. Also, how far back should I go in my work history? I have worked for 21 years.

Thank you for your advice,

Andre

Dear Andre:

There is no definite rule as to the number of words or pages on a resume. The standard is to write a concise resume that is easy to navigate and includes the relevant skills, education, and accomplishments to prove why you are an excellent candidate for your target job. For recent graduates and entry-level candidates this may be a one-page resume. However, for the majority of candidates a two-page resume is appropriate.man holding resume

To answer your other question: For most job seekers, only showing the most recent ten to fifteen years of work history on a professional resume is the best strategy. However, there are exceptions for candidates changing careers with early history that supports that goal. Also, candidates with long career breaks may need early history to prove they are qualified. Please feel free to write me with more details and I can provide suggestions particular to your situation.

Thanks for writing!

Debra
