Explaining the Reason for Leaving a Job

Debra WheatmanDear Debra:

In my first job, nearly 8 years ago, I was fired for excessive absences. I was having a tough time with attendance because my baby had frequent ear aches, ultimately requiring a minor surgery. The job I held after that (now for 7 years), I have performed well. I am starting a job search and wonder what I should say about why I left my first job. That is often asked in an interview. (Reason for leaving)

Thanks,

Constance

Dear Constance:

You are correct; it is wise to be prepared with a thoughtful answer for that interview question. Always be honest. Explain that you were the mother of a newborn who had a chronic illness that was ultimately resolved with a minor surgery. Unfortunately, the time away to care for your baby caused you to miss too much work. That is why you left. Assure the employer that your children are older now and that you have a back-up system in place so your children receive proper care when ill so you are able to work.

All the best,

Debra
