Career Query #2 - The hiring manager hasn't called, what do I do?
Q: I went for an interview with a company over a week ago. The hiring manager told me that I would hear back by the end of the week. So far I have not heard anything. What should my next course of action be?
A: If you haven’t already done so (and I hope you have), send a thank you note to the interviewer where you should briefly highlight the things you discussed that would enable you to make an impact for the organization. Follow up with a phone call to express your continued interest and desire for knowledge regarding next steps. Your continued diligence is necessary to ensure you remain top of mind. This does not mean you should call everyday. If you do not receive a return phone call, wait a few days and send a follow-up email. It is possible that they are seeing more candidates due to being at the beginning of the interview process or something is holding up the movement due to internal issues that you would not have any knowledge of. If you do connect with the hiring manager be sure to ask when a decision is expected; this is also a good time to inquire as to your standing as a candidate, including your potential for being extended an offer of full-time employment.
