Branding Statements to Make Your Finance Résumé Pop

If your résumé does not take advantage of the chance to establish your professional brand, you are missing a huge opportunity. Imagine if you went to a restaurant and you looked at a menu with no description? No details? No mention of flaky white meat, juicy and succulent, or pan-seared to lock in flavor? The menu simply read:

  1. Fish
  2. Chicken
  3. Beef
  4. Salad
  5. Dessert

How would you feel?  Like something was missing – and in a big way, right? Would you go back to that restaurant or would you go somewhere else where the menu provided something more engaging like "Flame-broiled Atlantic Salmon marinated in tangy pepper sauce, served with a side of fluffy truffle-infused rice pilaf, grilled mixed vegetables, and fresh baked garlic bread.”  Now that’s more like it.

So it is with branding on a résumé.  A personal branding statement at the very top of your résumé defines who you are and sets the tone for the reader.  Depending upon the position you are pursuing, you can modify the statement to highlight key strengths. There are several ways that a branding statement can be incorporated into a résumé. Each situation is unique and sometimes a simple headline that defines your brand is all you need.  At other times, a more detailed branding statement is in order.  So what exactly is a branding statement anyhow?

A branding statement provides a snapshot of who you are, what you do, and what your core focus is. Below are a few sample branding statements from the financial world to give you an idea of the many ways in which you can incorporate personal branding into your résumé. It is not enough to say you are a ‘Finance Executive’ at the top of your résumé.  Remember the analogy about the restaurant? Your own brand is personal – it should home in on the things that makes you unique.
