Boss Is Having an Affair with my Coworker!

Dear Deb:

I am the last to leave in my department because I run the final accounting reports.  Lately, I have seen my co-worker and my boss getting very flirty in his office. Last night, I walked past and saw them rather intimate in his car in the company parking lot. We are a small escrow firm with 3 locations and 47 employees. I have not told anyone but I feel like I should tell HR or do something. She reports directly to him. Or, should I mind my own business?  I can’t afford to lose my job. By the way, I have already started looking for a job and sending out resumes.

Thanks for your tips!

Marie

Dear Marie:

That is a tricky situation. It may feel like it is gossip or that you are intruding on their personal lives by talking to HR. However, the company is at risk for a sexual harassment law suit. You should talk in private with the Human Resources Manager. Don’t fill in the blanks with your assumptions. Simply tell the Human Resources Manager what you have witnessed. Do not tell anyone else about it. Gossiping, even to your best friend, is not good for your career. Affairs are common in the workplace. Unfortunately, when it is a manager and direct report, it has potential to end badly and sometimes costing the company thousands of dollars. Your duty ends with informing HR. I agree with you that this may be a good time to find a new boss.

Wishing you all the best,

Deb
