Today’s résumé critique will focus on a junior level administrative assistant we will call Chloe. While I am only reviewing a portion of her résumé, I do want to share that her email address was not professional and remind everyone who is looking for a job that email@example.com is not an appropriate address for a job seeker.
Chloe is a junior administrative assistant and has made several critical errors in preparing her résumé. She is using I, me, and my. A good résumé should never be written in the first person.
Her résumé is also missing a headline, which serves to provide the reader with immediate information as to what she is on a professional level. She can use this headline to elevate her brand. Perhaps she can say Administrative Assistant / Office Manager. That will help her to better position herself for upward movement rather than keeping her limited to clerical or reception positions.
Chloe is using an ineffective objective and should be using a summary statement instead that focuses on her hard and soft skills. Companies want to know the value she offers.
I can’t tell from this résumé if Chloe has specific experience with any computer programs or bookkeeping software. When she adds a core competency section, she should list accounts payable and accounts receivable skills as well as any specific software and typing skills she may have. She should also reference that she is a Notary Public earlier in her résumé.
Chloe’s résumé is filled with incomplete sentences and lacks the substance necessary to make a compelling case for interviewing her. She should work on providing more detail. For additional comments on Chloe’s résumé, click the link below.
