I am pleased to announce that I am now a featured provider of career related information to the American Marketing Association (AMA). I would like to share some recent Q&A posts that appeared in August on the AMA website http://www.marketingpower.com. (See below)

The AMA website can be a great resource if you are in the sales and marketing space.  They also feature a marketing channel known as AMA TV and I will be participating as an expert in this new initiative as well. Read on…

In this market is it safer to look to be on the corporate side of things or agency life?

I don’t think that one is safer than the other in this market.  The decision to work on the corporate side versus the agency side is really dependent on what you are comfortable with and which opportunities present themselves.

The important thing is to do your homework.  Do your best to investigate the stability of the company you intend to work for. Find out as much as you can about their corporate culture. Ask poignant questions to determine the long term viability of the role.

Does going to the same networking event every week and build on those relationships really benefit you? or is it better to attend different ones and get a variety of experiences and people in front of you.

Attending the same networking events regularly will help you establish longstanding relationships. This is important as those relationships will help support you through a search, but also the people you meet will be more likely to refer you to others within their network. Attending different groups is also valuable. The more connections you can make, the better.

If time is an issue, consider the group that will provide you with the best exposure to connections that can positively influence your career.  Networking is a two way street though so be prepared to give as much as you get.

You can also network via the internet by taking advantage of the social media boom. There are many groups you can join on LinkedIn, for example, that will give you local, national, and even international connections.

When unemployed should I take a job that I know won't be a good fit until I find a better one or should I hold out till I find one that is a good fit as to not seem like I am 'skipping' around from job to job?

I generally recommend holding out for a job that is a better fit if at all possible. However, there are times when it may be wiser to accept the position depending upon your economic and personal situation. Determine whether there might be opportunities for advancement in the future.

If not, consider how long you would be willing to stay in a position that does not present longer-term opportunities for you.  Hopping from job to job can hurt your résumé, so you do need to take this into consideration.
